Manhua β Chinese comics β occupy a fascinating middle ground in the East Asian comics landscape. They share visual DNA with manhwa (color, vertical scroll, digital-first publishing), but their thematic DNA is entirely their own. Cultivation, wuxia, reincarnation into xianxia novels, immortal sects, pill refining, spiritual roots β these are concepts that grew organically from Chinese literary tradition, specifically the wuxia and xianxia web novel genre that exploded in China in the 2000s and 2010s.
The manhua scene has had a complicated journey to international recognition. Translation quality was inconsistent for years. Distribution was scattered. And the sheer volume β China produces an enormous amount of comics β made it hard to separate the genuinely exceptional from the competent-but-generic.
But the best manhua is genuinely world-class. If you haven't explored it, this list is your starting point.
30. The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi) β Based on MXTX's beloved novel, this manhua adaptation follows Wei Wuxian, a demonic cultivator who is reincarnated and must work alongside his once-sworn enemy to solve a supernatural mystery. The relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji is one of fiction's great slow burns. Read Mo Dao Zu Shi β
29. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong) β Another MXTX adaptation.
